It's being widely "leaked" that Kasey Dunn is now staying at Oklahoma State instead of taking the UNLV OC position.  Keith Heyward has also announced that he is staying at Oregon and not taking the DC position.

If the additional positions are being filled by Arroyo as indicated by Joe Arrigo (below) then whoever becomes OC isn't going to have a lot of input on who is under him.

J
oe Arrigo @joearrigo

New names on Coach Arroyo's staff are:

Kenwick Thompson (LB/D-RG)
Cameron Norcross (OL)
Jordan Paopao (TE)
Danny Langsdorf (QB)
Scott Baumgartner (WR)

This goes along with the hires from last week. Formal announcements coming after Bowl game.

Bummer about Dunn I hope its just a rumor

Dunn is a pretty well admired coach and so an effort to keep him at Oklahoma State is not surprising. From a salary standpoint, it’s hard to compete against OSU if they’re serious about holding on to him. I was excited about the prospect of him coming here, but as we’re seeing there’s still a lot of moving parts happening.

Hard to get things finalized while season is still going.

Hypothetical...

You are looking at the LB coach from say Texas to be your DC...Suddenly the DC from Texas gets the HC job somewhere. In a scramble Texas decides to promote the guy you thought you had or bump his pay to keep some continuity..And what looked like a sure thing suddenly isn't..

No OC is going to have input with the hires, it is solely on the head coach. It was about money and Oklahoma St. paying to keep him

Particularly when you are trying to hire staff away from the wealthy tier of P5 programs, like Oregon, Oklahoma St, or Texas.  Guys getting offers are going to see what their current employer is going to counter-offer.  In the case of Dunn it looks like the counter-offer was a five-year extension for probably more than UNLV was offering.  UNLV will not do well in a bidding war against any of those schools.

There are always "title promotions" P5 schools use to justify pay bumps... Associate Head Coach, Assistant to the Head Coach, Co-Offensive Coordinator, etc...

BREAKING...#UNLVfb will not get Kasey Dunn as OC, who will instead be retained at #OklahomaState on a 5 year extension. Just spoke with his father minutes ago via text.

Yep.

Its a way to give pay bumps. OC 500k add associate HC gets you another 100k. Also a way for HC to help coordinators get their own gigs down the road..

Two interesting names to keep an eye on are Cort Dennison and Michael Johnson.  Both have been gone from the Oregon staff for one year and both were ranked as top 10 recruiters in the PAC-12 for the 2019 class (by 247Sports).

Michael Johnson was WR coach at Oregon but last January moved to be WR coach at Miss St... but today Miss St announced the firing of head coach Joe Moorhead, making Johnson suddenly "available".  Johnson was OC in the NFL for one season (49ers) and one season at UCLA.

Cort Dennison is co-DC (and outside LB coach) at Louisville and is considered to be one of the top rising young coaches (the 30-under-30 rankings), and his is about 30 now.  He has recruited well at Louisville, then Oregon, then again at Louisville after he returned.  He has west coast ties (from Utah, played at Washington) and was just a grad assistant at Louisville in '14 but has been promoted every single season he has coached. Dennison was a grad assistant in '14, but was making $150K at UL by 2017, then $300K at Oregon in 2018, then $400K this season back at UL.

If it is true that former UNM WR coach Scott Baumgartner will become the UNLV WR coach, then that would conflict with Michael Johnson for that spot, but still Johnson would be an interesting addition.

UNLV: Marcus Arroyo is bringing Trey Watson (assistant coach) and Matt Leitch (recruiting coordinator) with him from Oregon, sources tell FootballScoop.

At Oregon this season, Watson @CoachTreW was listed as a graduate assistant on defense (and is a former DB) and Leitch @mattleitch_uo was "Assistant Director of Player Personnel".  These two were among the 42 guys Cristobal had under him on his staff this season.
